Here is a list of our favorite iPad applications. Some are free however some are paid. Each picture links to the application.
Letter Recognition/Writing
Although it is not free, it provides children with careful practice of letter writing. It can be frustrating for some to use, as they cannot remove their finger from the lines for it to move on.
This is a cheaper alternative to Wet Dry Try and the children really love the colors and animation. Even after children have learned their letters, they will play this game just for fun!
Another cheap alternative to the first game, Letter School is a fun and entertaining way to practice letter recognition.
Listening to Books
The Storia app allows you to purchase eBooks from the Scholastic website. You can create an account and even purchase them through your child's teacher to help them earn books for their classroom.
MeeGenius is a wonderful app that allows you to download MANY books. The words highlight as the text is read aloud to your child.
Number Concepts
Numberline Frog allows children to practice number skills that are standards in kindergarten. It is a little more advanced than some of the other kindergarten apps below.
Monkey Math is always a class favorite. There are various games practicing several different math skills for the kindergarten level and above.
Counting Board is a fun way to practice number recognition and patterns to 100.
Everyday Mathematics Monster Squeeze provides number practice games such as ordering numbers and finding more or less.
Teaching Number Lines has a variety of number games at various levels. The children like the animation in this game.
Montessori Kindergarten Math is not a free app. However, it has some great beginning number concept games such as more and less, ordering numbers, and before and after. These are all kindergarten math standards.
Misc Apps
Doodlecast allows students to record their voice and drawings. This is especially effective when recording their thoughts on how to solve a problem or to narrate their journaling.
Robot Friend is a pre-coding application. Children practice the sequencing skills necessary when coding or creating a computer program. This is also a great app for promoting problem solving and math skills.
Letter Sounds
This application is the same as the Starfall Website (sounds only portion). It is paid, but a great app!
There are multiple versions of the Bob Books app, some paid and some lite or free. They all have something to offer and have different levels of use for every child.
There are both free and paid versions of this application. We purchased the paid because the children loved playing and it is a very worthwhile application.
There are so many different ABC Magic apps, we have a folder dedicated just to them! There are many different free apps for children to use to master various phonics skills.
Quick Words
This free application allows for a lot of practice. We use the first section on color words to help us memorize some very tricky words for first grade.
There are both paid and free versions of Spellosaur. The game allows you to put in your own words (we give out copies of the quick word lists) and plays various games with your child to help them master words. This game has helped many children memorize their quick words.
Addition & Subtraction
Math Heroes is the most requested game in our class. The children love the quick action and animation. It can be a great way to practice addition and subtraction.
Addition and Subtraction for kids has both paid and free versions. The added use of pictures to find the answers is helpful.
Splash Math provides practice in a variety of math skills and levels.
10 Frame Fill provides practice in basic number skills required for addition and subtraction.
Misc Math Apps
If you were ever looking for an app to promote problem solving, spacial concepts, or the ability to stick with a problem until it is solved, Big Seed is the app! This application gets more and more difficult. It really makes children think and problem solve. Some of the kids have spent a week on one problem, proving that if they stick with it they can do it!
Tap Tap Blocks allows children to create and dissect 3D shapes. This promotes spacial concepts needed for geometry lessons.
Misc Apps
QuickVoice allows students to record their voice while reading. They can then listen to their recording and hear how smooth their reading is becoming.
My Story is an eBook creator for young children. They can create an eBook and then mail it to any email address to be viewed online.
